Backyard Tropical Food Forest in Northern California
Last year I transformed my backyard into a subtropical food forest where I'm now growing hundreds of of edible plants including tropical and subtropical fruits that don't normally grow in my zone (9b). I'll take you on a tour of my densely planted backyard jungle in this first video on my new series, to show you that it's possible to grow tropical plants in non tropical climates. In future videos I'll show you exactly how I created this food forest and everything I'm doing to maintain it through the years.

How to Treat Leaf Curl in Peach and Nectarine Trees
What if your tree was bought from a big box store, planted during july, and doesnt have 3 to 4 nice scaffold branching until shoulder height? Can you just cut the trunk at the desired height and itll regrow appropriately? Im in PA, zone 6. Thanks for the input for a first timer.
Im in Sacramento. Where did you get your plants?
I finally found someone in California actually taking advantage of their back yard. I just don’t get the purpose of having grass. It’s almost useless and wasteful. Edible trees and plants are much more beneficial. For me watching something grow (not grass) and taking care of it is so much enjoyable and comforting. Eating the results of your labor is even more satisfied that hard to explain.
where in northern california?
I am so jealous
I am growing my biceps next season😅
Just stick them in ground and they grow 👍
this is incredible. I'm in the Sacramento region also, although in a much hotter/drier microclimate. The Algorithm just handed me this video, looking forward to checking out more of your stuff.
I really need my soil tested, I have spent HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS on grass seed only to have it germinate, grow about 2 inches and then completely die in about 4-6 weeks from start to finish. I am literally throwing money away. I need help.
Do you ever have gophers or other pests?
Not only apples, some North American begonias can pollinate apples, the apple family is bigger than you know, and there are many other species that can cross with apples, so I guess California should have other members from the apple family.
I remember when you first bought this house, the tomato bean garden used to be where your tropical food forest is! So satisfying to see the progress!!! Always nice to see your videos! 🌱🔥🚒🍍🍋🟩
Beautiful fruit. Do you spray for bugs or how do you combat the pests/disease?
I live in sacramento and Im trying to grow my tropical plants. They still in the green house.
Trying to save a 70+ year old family fig tree I hope I can save it thanks
What did you paint this stock tank with? Been looking at a few options, but cant find anything that adheres to galvanized too well. Saw some etching suggestions with vinegar + an abrasive to prep, but still chips and peels in the sun.
why havent you made any new videos bro?
I need to prune my avocado tree but I don't know when is the best time to do so. When would you recommend would be the best time?
Dude, how big is your garden??
this ties in with what I have read, that summer pruning puts a tree 'on a diet' to reduce vigour. Should the same principles be followed for hazelnut trees?
I have 12 tomato plants and 5 tree starts in growbags which I set in dishpans with 3" water to bottom water by wicking. NOW I have mosquitos and I am tired of watering twice a day. The tomatoes are sucking up 1qt of water per day. SO I just put it all on DRIP. It will water @ 3am when all is cool and the plants have a couple of hours to soak up all the moisture before the blazing hot sun comes up to evap it all. !
Hai keren sekali ya ,sangat kaya buah yg pertama kali baru tahu n melihat yg di indo belum pernah lihat / ada keindahan yg alami selamat berkebun.happy garden sukses selalu .kerja keras & . berhasil sukses .central borneo indonesia tks
My tree has a slimmy blotch at the base off the trunk. We removed it and put fresh dirt but the past three years. It’s getting worse. Peaches grow but the have worms. Any advice?
Loved the video. How big is the area of your forest? Watching from Cape Town 🇿🇦
Hi I live in Northern California and I’m interested in starting a tropical fruit forest like you how can I contact you to get started
Warmer climates are lucky 🎉
For anyone interested in free or very cheap soil testing, look for your local extension office. Most states offer free soil testing, just take samples and drop them off at the extension office and you’ll get accurate results in a weekday or two
So I live in Minnesota and I have 2 apple trees and some let my husband know that the apples are growing to soon so he took them off we had the trees for 3 years and it is the first year they had apples so was it the right thing to do by taking them off
O and we have not cut it like you are in the video it is summer so I don’t know how to do it
I wonder if you can find papaya pollen and try to create a fertile fruit to grow the hybrid from the fruit.
Not sure if I missed this but summer pruning is done after the harvest right?
What is your planting interval thanjs
I love your video for setting up a stock tank pool. We just bought one and plan on painting the inside. What steps do you recommend taking and what type of paint do I need to paint the inside of the stock tank? Thank you for your help. Jim
Wish i was is zone 9b at least, I'm in 9a in a rural area so we get so cold and i would love to grow guavas and papayas but they don't make it. People in track home communities can, cuz all the concrete keeps it warmer at night, as i have seen guavas in those places.
Nice and straightforward thanks. What time of year to take cuttings? And does it need to be during the dormant stage when pruning or can I take cuttings during summer? Thanks!
Do you have critters to come eat your fruit and how do you prevent it?
These kinds of pool tanks seem to be popular. I wonder what makes them favorable over others. Wouldn't that thing be prone to rust?
Is it too late to cut my 3 year old fruit trees super low like you've done?
Firstly, the chocolate pudding fruit does not taste remotely like chocolate or pudding. Secondly, I don't think you understand nitrogen fixation, a process which occurs in the soil and not through the air.
Is there a video or details on what you used to fill the beds? Im also in Sacramento
Can you put a link to the irrigation system in this video?
I ordered the pump that was on your link & it was completely different than the one in your video. It's smaller and has no threaded collars on the hoses. You may want to change the link, because I have to send mine back.
I too live in sac. Love the videos. Mind saying where you source most of your fruit trees?
Lovely garden! I can only hope to have a garden that’s as bountiful as yours.
This dude is the antithesis of suburban dads with their ride on mowers and manicured fairway lawns. Bravo. 👏
Its July right now and my 4 year old apple tree has fruit. Can I still prune that tree right now in the summer? or wait till fall? Not sure if it will effect the fruit on the tree.
Bro is having the best garden mukbang
2026 he will post another vid.
I’m flabbergasted dude
This is the best described and illustrated pruning I have seen. Thank you.
That's absolutely awesome dude!! I'm following your move
